J. B. Barton Dies Suddenly
The community was shocked by the announcement Thursday morning that J. B. Barton had died suddenly at his home, having been in his usual health until, without warning his life went out.
James Benjamin Barton was born in Steueben County, New York, on January 26, 1849 and died at his home in Colfax the morning of January 7, 1926, aged 76 years, 11 months and 12 days.
Mr. Barton moved to Newton, Iowa with his parents in 1868 and was there united in marriage to Martha Shelinbarger Jan. 29, 1874. To this union were born seven children, three of whom are still living: Mrs. Josephine Owens, Mrs. Ray Lee and Wesley Barton, all of Colfax.
Mr. Barton moved from Seevers to Colfax where Mrs. Barton preceded him in death passing from this life Sept. 7th, 1921.
As a young man Mr. Barton joined the Church of Christ. He was an active member of I.O.O.F. lodge of Prairie City.
Besides his three children Mr. Barton is survived by one sister, Mrs. Amanda Shelinbarger of Woodward, Okla., and four brothers, John C. of Rock Island, Ill., Guy and Arthur both of LeMars, Iowa and Rev. Henry Barton of Cedar Falls, Iowa.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the Christian Church at 1 o’clock with Rev. V. H. Rogers officiating. The body was laid to rest in the Wild Cat cemetery, south of Newton.
