Yesterday afternoon the body of Mrs. John Davis was brought to Newton from Des Moines, where her death occurred Sunday evening, and laid to rest in the cemetery here. Accompanying the remains were her husband and son, Mr. Arthur Davis and wife of Chicago, another son, George Sells Davis, of this city, who has been in Des Moines since Sunday, and a brother of the deceased, Mr. E. L. Christy, of Cedar Rapids.

Short burial services were held at the cemetery conducted by Rev. W. Dieffenbach of the First Lutheran Church. The bearers were Chas. Jasper, Charles H. Jasper, Racy Townsend, J. W. Donovan, Chester Sloanaker, and Don Iverson.

Mrs. Davis’ grandfather was Captain Hugh Christy, who was in the War of 1812, under General Wm. H. Harrison.

Mrs. Mary C. Davis was born in Warrenton, Jefferson County, Ohio, April 12, 1839. In the year 1843 she came to Wapello, Iowa, with her parents, where she resided until her marriage to Mr. John Davis in the year 1860, June 10, at which time they came to Des Moines. Their home has been all these years at 1109 Court Avenue.

At one time Mrs. Davis was a teacher in Iowa City, and later taught in the Institute for the Blind, in that city. With her husband she moved to Des Mines at the time the capitol of the state was changed to that city from Iowa City.

Of the four sons born to Mrs. Davis, one son Frank, died forty-two years ago; George Sells is a jeweler in this city; Arthur C. and Lee H. are of the orchestra in the Studebaker Theater, Chicago, Ill. The latter could not be present to attend the funeral of the mother, as he is very ill with rheumatism.

Mrs. Davis has often visited in this city at the home of her son, George Sells Davis. She was a beautiful woman and her charming personality will long be remembered by the friends who knew and loved her here, as she will be cherished in the hearts of the loved ones of her home, and by her life-time friends here. ~ The Newton Daily News, Thursday, February 28, 1907, Page 1, Column 2
