Death of Mary Hays Bell

Last Saturday Mr. and Mrs. Anderson Hays received a message from Fremont, Neb., telling them of the dangerous illness of their daughter, Mrs. Mary E. Bell. The father started immediately for the bedside of his daughter, arriving a short time before she died. She was perfectly conscious and it was a great comfort to Mr. Hays to have the privilege of seeing her again in life.

The father, accompanied by the bereaved husband, brought the body to Newton, arriving on Tuesday evening, and the funeral services were held at two o’clock yesterday at the A. M. E. church, conducted by Rev. T. W. Lewis, a large number of relatives and old friends being in attendance.

Most of the years of Mrs. Bell’s life have been spent in Newton, where by her modest, womanly manners and gentle, Christian disposition she drew around her the warmest of friends, not by any means confined to her own race. Six years ago she was united in marriage to James Bell of Fremont, Neb., and most of the time since lived in that city. She leaves a brother and half brother of this city Dick Hays and Lewis Mays. ~ The Newton Record Thursday, February 17, 1898
