Yesterday afternoon at two o’clock the funeral over the remains of Johnson Garey was held from the United Presbyterian Church at Palo Alto, the services being in charge of Rev. E. F. Gillis. The interment was made in the cemetery near the church.
Mr. Garey was born in New York State in 1821, and had he lived a few months longer, would have seen his eighty-sixth birthday. After leaving his native state he lived in Pennsylvania a number of years, and then came to Iowa and Jasper County about twenty-six years ago.
He was a Civil War veteran, a member of the Third Iowa. By trade a blacksmith, but for many years he had resided on a farm. For a long time he has had poor health, and the last week before his death he was so weak that his death was expected at any time. Besides his wife he leaves a niece, Mrs. Hulda Wilcox, the only remaining one of his immediate family. ~ The Newton Daily News, Friday, January 18, 1907, Page 1, Column 6
