Yesterday at the Free Methodist Church was held the funeral of James M. Cook, whose death occurred very suddenly last Thursday evening. The services were in charge of Rev. Scripter. The pallbearers were Rev. J. S. Booton, Fred Richards, D. Stamper, J. G. Widle and Asher Dunn. Following the services at the church, the interment was made in the Newton Cemetery.
Mr. Cook was born in New York State in 1836. During his boyhood days he resided near Albion, Michigan and it was there about forty years ago that he was married to Miss Clarissa Griffin. After their marriage for many years they resided at Lake Crystal, Minn. Coming to Newton about four years ago, they have made their home with their daughter, Mrs. T. C. Ewing, until last fall, when they moved into the college addition, in the home where his death occurred.
Since he came to this city he has assisted his son-in-law, T. C. Ewing, with his janitor work, and out at the west school, the boys and girls liked the kind old man and sent beautiful flowers after his death to the home, expressing their kindness and sympathy.
Deceased is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. T. C. Ewing and Mrs. J. B. Lytton, the latter makes her home with her parents. ~ The Newton Daily News, Monday, January 21, 1907, Page 1, Column 3
