Larry Leonard Herbold
16 Sept 1933-23 Apr 2018

Larry Leonard Herbold was born Sept. 16, 1933, and died April 23, 2018. A memorial service for Dr. Herbold will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 12 at Edgewater Retirement Community, 9225 Cascade Ave., West Des Moines, where he was a resident. He died of pneumonia at Iowa Methodist Medical Center, the same hospital where he was born 84 years ago. His parents were Elvenrene Orion Herbold and Janet Lanita (Leonard) Herbold of Colfax.

Larry grew up on a farm north of Colfax, where he became very interested in livestock. That along with his successful 4-H activities led him to a career in veterinary medicine. Larry graduated from Newton High School in 1952, and enrolled at Iowa State University where he became a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He married his college sweetheart, Jane Montgomery of Cedar Rapids, Aug. 18, 1956, and they were together 62 happy years.

Dr. Herbold received his DVM degree from Iowa State University in 1958, and headed for Montgomery County where he joined the Red Oak Veterinary Clinic. Soon he became known as “Doc.” Larry was the mayor of Stanton, the first non-Swedish mayor ever elected. He was always active in the communities in which he lived. During their time in Stanton, two children were born, Mark and Laura. The couple bought a farm halfway between Red Oak and Stanton, built a new home and established a cow/calf operation on the farm.

After 31 years, his career took a change and he became a veterinary supervisor for meat and poultry inspection for the state of Iowa which required a move back to Ames in 1989. During their time in Ames, Larry was involved in several activities and served as president of Golden K Kiwanis. He and Jane were heavily involved with university activities and were proud season ticket holders for football and basketball games. In 2009, they moved to Edgewater Retirement Community in West Des Moines.

Larry is survived by his wife, Jane; son, Mark (Amy Marshall) of Albia; daughter, Laura (Marv) Seiler of Van Meter; grandchildren, Colin Herbold and Regan, Cole and Jade Seiler; great-granddaughter, Rowan Heather; brother, Jim (Helen) Herbold of Newton, as well as many other family members.

The cremains will be inurned in Ames, in the columbarium at Collegiate United Methodist Church where he was a member.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Edgewater Good Samaritan Fund, ISU Foundation (for Veterinary Medicine) or the Montgomery County Memorial Hospital Foundation ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, Iowa 01 May 2018.
