Obituary of John Keipp
John Philip Keipp was born in Goshen, Indiana, April 17, 1865, and died near Kerans, Texas, July 6, 1916, age 51 years, 2 months and 19 days. Mr. Keipp came to Colfax in 1884 and on September 20, 1886, he was united in marriage to Emma Main. To this union was born one son Harry, who now resides at Marietta, Minn., and who was present at the funeral services. Besides the wife and son, Mr. Keipp leaves to mourn his loss a father and eight brothers and sisters. Mr. Keipp was raised in the Lutheran church but in 1897 he united with the Presbyterian church in Colfax. For a number of years he, with his brothers, ran what is now known as the Kelsey barber shop. About thirteen years ago he bought the Grand Hotel and conducted it until his removal to Texas about six years ago.
Mr. Keipp was well known in Colfax and while he had been in poor health for a year and a half, his death came as a distinct shock to his many friends here. The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church last Sunday afternoon, conducted by Rev. G. H. Horn, who was filling the pulpit here temporarily on that day. The interment was at Oak Hill cemetery. Mr. Keipp was a member of the Elk Lodge and the fact that Mrs. Keipp’s message did not reach his lodge in time is the reason the lodge did not assist in the funeral services. Dr. M. M. Knowles of Hampton, who was physician at the Grand while the Keipps had charge there, attended the funeral services.
