Altes, George
Obituary of George Altes
George Altes Sr., was born at Rheinpfalz, Bavaria, March 1827. He was educated in the state school and received his religious instruction in the state church of which he became a member when confirmed. He was united in marriage to Miss Clara Hotch in 1858. This union was blessed with eleven children, five preceded their father in infancy. Three sons and three daughters were spared to them who are living at present, George, Jacob and Clara, of Steele, N. Dak.; Mrs. Fred Loerch, of Medina, N. Dak.; Mrs. Fred Enabnit, of Meservy, Iowa, and John Altes, of Mingo.
Mr. and Mrs. Altes came to this country from Bavaria in 1878. They settled on a farm near Mingo, Iowa, at that time and in that neighborhood, the Evangelical church was mightily calling men to repentance, and urged such to press into the Kingdom. Father Altes and family obeyed the call and joined this church in which he proved himself a faithful member and efficient steward. In 1908 he and Mother Altes enjoyed the pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary surrounded by their children, grandchildren, relatives and a host of friends. For the last two years Mr. and Mrs. Altes and daughter, Clara, have made their home in Steele, N.D. The infirmities of old age confined him to the house, where he spent much time in reading the Holy Bible, religious literature and prayer. He longed for the hour of departure. At 1 o’clock Saturday morning, June 17, 1916, the summons came quietly, peacefully he passed away to enter the mansions above, to see his Saviour face to face. Besides the aged wife, he leaves to mourn his loss six children, thirty grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services were held at the M. E. Church at 2 p.m. conducted by Rev. Otto G. Ponath. Interment was made in Wood Lawn cemetery.
