Oscar Evans, who died at his home December 5, 1906, was born in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, February 16, 1840, and came to Newton with his parents when about sixteen years of age. This city has been his home since with the exception of five years at which time he was a resident of Omaha, Nebraska.

Mr. Evans was a Civil War veteran, a member of Company I, Tenth Iowa Infantry, and served with his company nearly four years, until the close of the war. He took part in the Battles of Iuka, Corinth, Jackson, Champion Hill, Vicksburg and Mission Ridge. He of the spoke of his army experiences and of the many hardships endured during that time.

On July 25, 1877, he was united in marriage in this city to Miss Carrie Coppersmith, who survives him. He had three sons, Albert E., Arthur E. and John G. Albert died in infancy, but the other two sons were with him during his long illness and were by his bedside at the time he passed away.

He was a kind and loving father and a tender, devoted husband. His home life being an exceptionally happy one.

In all his relations in life he was a strictly honorable, his honesty and uprightness being well known throughout the community.

Besides his immediate family he is survived by four brothers, Inman and Frank Evans, of this city, John Evans, of Quincy, Illinois and William Evans of Osborne, Kansas.

His father, Mark Evans, died about eighteen years ago and his mother one year ago.

Mr. Evans has been a very great sufferer for many months. He was afflicted with a complication of diseases, but throughout his long illness he was remarkably cheerful and considerate of others, almost to the last hoping for permanent improvement.

The verdict of those who knew him as brother, neighbor, friend, will be “A good man has gone from among us.”

The funeral services will be held tomorrow at one o’clock in the afternoon from his residence. Rev. O. S. Baker, of the First Methodist Church, will officiate. ~ The Newton Daily News, Thursday, December 6, 1906, Page 4, Column 3
