Robert McCaulley, aged 77 years, who has been a resident and well-known farmer of this county for thirty-six, died last night about five o’clock of heart failure. Mr. McCaulley was on the streets Thursday, and although for several months he has not been as strong and well as usual, not one of the members of his family thought or realized that he was seriously afflicted.
That night about eleven o’clock he was taken with a very serious pain in the *** arm, which extended to his side. He suffered very much all day Friday and a little before five o’clock that evening passed away in the arms of his youngest son, Frank Scarborough, of Mitchellville, who had arrived that morning at the home.
The death of the father coming so suddenly is a blow to all the family, especially the wife who suffered a stroke of paralysis last January, and has since been a very great invalid.
Robert McCaulley was born in Fayette County, Pa., November 18, 1828, and had he lived until next month, he would have been 78 years old.
When two years old his parents removed to Ohio, where he resided until thirty-six years ago, when with his family he removed to Jasper County. For a number of years they resided on a farm between Monroe and Prairie City. Sixteen years ago they came to Newton, living first about a half a mile south of the fair grounds, where his death occurred.
He was a good man, honest and upright in his relations to his fellow men, a kind husband and a loving father.
Besides his wife he is survived by four children, Mrs. Deborah E. Scarborough of Colfax, Oscar M. of Monroe, Franklin of Mitchellville, and Mrs. Malissa Ann Offill of Monroe. He also leaves eighteen grandchildren and one great grandchild.
For many years Mr. McCaulley has been a member of the Methodist Church.
The funeral will be held from the family home Monday morning at nine o’clock, and will be in the charge of Rev. O. S. Baker.
Interment will be in the cemetery at Monroe. ~ The Newton Daily News, Saturday, October 13, 1906, Page 1, Column 1
