Mrs. Thomas Burton, after years of illness, died at her home 430 North Race Street, yesterday morning, August 26, about seven o’clock. Last summer Mrs. Burton went to the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hill, at Horton, Kansas, for several weeks visit and after returning was much better and she seemed stronger that she had been for some time. This condition did not last long, and since early last fall she was been confined to her home and much of the time in her bed.

Mrs. Burton’s maiden name was Nancy J. Lamer. She was born at Canoe Creek, Pennsylvania, June 18, 1832. She was married while still residing in her native state to Washington Stone. After his death, in the fall of 1870, Mrs. Stone and her children in company with her father came to Newton and purchased the residence on Race Street, where for the past thirty-six years she has made her home.

Twenty-six years ago last June Mrs. Stone became the wife of Thomas Burton, who with her daughter, Mrs. Stella Wells, and Son Harry Stone, have cared for her most tenderly during all these years of illness.

Mrs. Burton was a member of the First Methodist Church. She was a good Christian woman, cheerful and bright in her home and always doing some loving deed, that another might be happier.

She leaves besides her husband, four children, Mrs. Dan Hill and Os Stone of Horton, Kansas, and Mrs. Stella Wells and Harry Stone of this city, thirteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

During all the long years of her illness she has been patient for one so sadly afflicted, but since she became very weak, many times during the last four months she has expressed the wish that she might be released from her weary suffering. On Saturday she was more comfortable than she has been for several days, and pass a quiet night sleeping restfully as those caring for her thought, but it was the sleep of death, for early yesterday morning, with out waking, she passed away so quietly that her loved ones hardly knew when she was gone.

The funeral will be held at 3:30 o’clock tomorrow afternoon from the home. ~ The Newton Daily News, Monday, August 27, 1906, Page 1, Column 4
