Rev. B.E. “Eddie” Humes, 86, of Palatka became absent from the body and present with the Lord Thursday, March 22, 2018 at Haven Hospice Roberts Care Center in Palatka following a brief illness.

Bro. Eddie was a native of Newton, Iowa. He served honorably in the United States Navy. In 1958 he earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from East Texas Baptist College in Marshall, TX. In 1959 he earned a Master of Arts Degree from Stephen F. Austin State College in Nacodoches, TX. He taught at North Greenville Junior College in Tigerville, SC from 1959 until 1964. He did post graduate studies at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, NC. He pastored Tabernacle Baptist Church in Palatka 1964-1967, High Springs Baptist Church 1967-1975 and First Baptist Church of Madison 1975-1987. He was then called to serve as Director of Missions for Layfayette Baptist Association in North Central Florida 1987-1997, serving 40+ churches in the association. Returning to Palatka in 1997 he had been called to serve as Interim Pastor in several local churches including First Baptist Church of Welaka, Tabernacle Baptist Church, the former Lemon Heights Baptist Church, Hillcrest Baptist Church, Paran Baptist Church, the former First Baptist Church of East Palatka, and Providence Baptist Church. With much prayer and work, and with God’s help, his 50+ year ministry as a Servant of the Lord was greatly blessed. Whether he was preparing and delivering a sermon, officiating at a baptism, wedding or funeral, visiting the sick, consoling the bereaved, serving as a counselor to a church member, friend or another pastor, he ministered with God’s love and help.

He had been a member of several different professional and civic organizations. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing and traveling.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Bennett and Cora Humes; a brother, Francis Lee Humes; three sisters, Judith Gayle Prevo, Eunetta Alice Quigley, and Virginia Harl.

Surviving are his beloved wife of 63 years, Jackie Hogarth Humes of Palatka; three sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Edward Humes and wife, Marla Kidd Humes of Tallahassee, Louis Hogarth Humes and wife, Angela Phelps Humes of Louisville, KY, and Terry Corben Humes and wife, Lori DePamphilis Humes of Coral Springs; two sisters, Gwendolyn Quigley of Muscatine, IA and Georgia Quigley of Columbia, MO; five grandchildren, Emily Susanne Walters, Cassandra Marie Baker, Charlotte Louise Humes, Abigail Nicole Humes, and Kathryn Lucille Humes; three great grandchildren, Elaina Keyes Baker, Sara Emily Chipps, and Caiden River Chipps; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service honoring God and celebrating Bro. Eddie’s life will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, March 31st at First Baptist Church of Palatka with his son, Louis Humes, Rev. Benny Reynolds, and Bro. Robert Humes officiating. The family will begin receiving friends at 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will follow in Palatka Memorial Gardens with military honors bestowed by the U.S. Navy.
