June 13, 1925 - March 2, 2018

Ernest E. “Bud” Schwab, 92, of Newton, IA and formerly of Coralville, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 2, 2018. In honor of Bud’s wishes, no public services will be held. Private family inurnment will be held at later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Coralville, IA.

Ernest was born in Oxford, IA on June 13, 1925, the son of John and Zelda (Lane) Schwab. He was raised in Louisa County, near Gladwin, IA. He attended grade school at Frog Pond rural school, high school at Columbus Junction and Oxford, IA. He graduated with the Columbus Junction class of ’44.

He served in The United States Navy during WWII for three years. Aboard the USS Bunker Hill CV 17, which was struck by two kamikazes on May 11, 1945 and severely damaged, Bud subsequently went on to receive a Purple Heart and other accommodations. The ship returned to the Bremerton Naval shipyard for repairs.

Bud spent most of his adult life living in Coralville, IA in the house he built. On March 6, 1948, he married E. Jean Polton in Iowa City at the Methodist Parsonage. Erma later passed away on May 24, 2005 in Newton, IA.

He was employed by The University of Iowa, Hydraulics Research Department for 33 years, then in the Mechanical Engineering Department for 11 years, both as an Electronics Technician and a Senior ERD Machinist. He also worked several years, part-time, for Hubbard Instrument Company, building custom electronic instruments to measure the flow of gasses and fluids.

Survivors include his daughter Valerie (Mike) Cook of Baxter, IA, and two grandchildren: Dillon of Baxter, IA and Ian (Jessica Moyer) of Cedar Rapids, IA; and one sister Dorothy.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Erma of 57 years, their daughter Stephanie Jean, two sons Brent Allan Schwab and Kevin Edwin Schwab, four brothers and two sisters. ~ The Lensing Funeral Home, Coralville, IA 02 Mar 2018.
