Robert John Van Weelden was born Oct. 20, 1964, in Grinnell. He was the oldest of two children born to Harley Blaine and Norma Jean (Vander Streek) Van Weelden. Robert attended Sully Christian School and later graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School. While in school, Robert participated in track, football, and FFA. On Oct. 17, 1987, Robert was united in marriage with Loretta June Buckley and to this union two children were born: Mariah Dale and Taylor Ray.
Robert worked at Ver Ploeg Farm Supply and Vermeer Manufacturing. Robert also loved working on the family farm, helping his grandfather Dick and his uncle Dwight. He enjoyed traveling, cooking, spending time with his children and friends, and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan.
Nov. 5, 2017, Robert passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines at the age of 53 years.
He is survived by his two children, Mariah Dale Buckley Van Weelden and Taylor Ray Van Weelden of Prairie City; his parents, Harley and Norma Van Weelden of Pella; and his brother, Michael Van Weelden of Pella. He also leaves his former wife, Loretta, and her husband Kevin Bonham of Prairie City.
Robert was baptized and made profession of his faith at the Sully Christian Reformed Church. He also attended church at Sully First Reformed Church, Lutheran Church of the Cross in Altoona, and New Hope Community Church in Pella.
