Richard “Dick” Jay, 84, of Naples, FL, died on Monday, Oct. 9, 2017, at the Naples Community Hospi-tal. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. James Dotson officiating. Casket bearers will be his grandchildren: Josh Jay, Branden Jay, Jason Jay, Wade Jay, Brandon Jay, Shantell Jay, Nichole Jay, and Grace Miler. Military rites will be conducted by the Iowa Veterans Funeral Squad of Camp Dodge. Interment will be at the Woodland Cemetery in Lynnville.
Memorials may be directed to the Richard Jay Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, IA 50112.
Dick was born Sept. 10, 1933, in Lynnville, to Bernard and Ruth White Jay. He was raised in Lynnville and graduated with the Class of 1952 from Lynnville High School. He was an outstanding athlete in high school. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he enrolled at William Penn College and received his BA degree in education and participated in sports.
Dick was married to Delores Streeter of Kellogg and to this union three children were born. The family lived in Oskaloosa and Altoona, and he worked in the Des Moines School District as a teacher and coach. Dick moved to Florida in the early 1980s and worked as a golf instructor and realtor. He was married to Linda Penzo on July 4, 1998, in Naples. Dick and Linda made their home in Naples.
Dick was an avid supporter and booster of William Penn College athletics and was inducted into the William Penn College Hall of Fame. He enjoyed playing golf, construction projects, and socializing with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Jay of Naples, FL; his children, Jeff (Tammy) Jay of Runnells, Greg Jay of Bondurant, and Pam (Mitch Burr) Jay-Miler of North Liberty; eight grandchildren; four great- grandchildren; two brothers, Giles (Tomma Lou) Jay of Grinnell and Max (Verla) Jay of Newton; and one sister, Pat Pettingill of Waukon.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ray.
