Jasper County Farmer Dies At St. Thomas Hospital, Marshalltown
Baxter, Ia. (Special to The Daily News) – Russell R. Hampton, 70-year-old farmer living 3 ½ miles northwest of Baxter, died Thursday evening at 9:30 o’clock at the St. Thomas hospital in Marshalltown. He had been ill three weeks and had been a patient there since Wednesday.
Mr. Hampton’s daughter, Esther, died a month ago – on Feb. 1.
He was born at Clyde, Ia., Nov. 30, 1870, the son of William and Sarah Hampton and one of 12 children.
Moving to Nebraska in 1887 he came back to Jasper county in 1909 and had lived here since. He was wed to Dessie Beach March 10, 1897.
Surviving are his wife, a daughter, Mrs. Fern Morris of Keota, Ia., a grand daughter, Arlene Kruseman of Keota, three sisters, Mrs. C. J. Crosby of Gering, Nebr., Mrs. Jennie Hughes of Mapleton, Kan., Mrs. Ida Signs of Collins and two brothers, Albert and Will of Gering, Nebr.
Funeral arrangements were being made today.

Baxter, Ia. (Special to The Daily News) – Russell R. Hampton was born on a farm near Clyde, Nov. 30, 1870. He died at the St. Thomas hospital in Marshalltown March 6, 1941, at the age of 70 years, three months and six days. He was the son of William R. and Sarah Hampton, who were among the early settlers of Jasper county.
In 1887 the family moved to Nebraska, where he grew to manhood. In 1907 he returned to Jasper county and purchased the farm on which he lived until the time of his death. He was married to Odessa Veach, March 10, 1897. His funeral was on their 44th wedding anniversary.
Two daughters were born to Mr. and Mrs. Hampton, the elder Mrs. Fern Morris lives at Keota. Esther departed this life on Feb. 1, 1941.
The surviving brothers and sisters are William and Albert Hampton and Mrs. C. J. Crosby of Gering, Neb., Mrs. Jennie L. Hughes of Mapleton, Kan., and Mrs. Ida Signs of Collins.
In the past year he had not been his robust self but no fears for his health were expressed until recent months, when the doctors called his trouble pernicious anemia. He was not well at the time of Esther’s death and her loss was a severe shock to him.
He was taken to the hospital march 5 where he was given a blood transfusion and everything possible was done for him but to no avail.
Funeral services were conducted in the Baxter Congregational church Monday afternoon, March 10.
The Rev. David Arnold and Rev. B. W. Northrop officiated at the services and music was furnished by C. F. Weeks and Mrs. Arthur Dodd with Mrs. E. J. Goodwin at the piano. The Rev. Arnold sang a solo with Mrs. Arnold at the piano.
Mrs. John Boyd and Mrs. Wayne Miller had charge of flower arrangements.
Burial at Restland cemetery with pallbearers being Fred Butler, Glenn Perry, James McGrane, Alfred Flora, Donald Donaldson, and Leonard Hamilton.
