F. P. Bell Dies Today
Funeral Service to Be Conducted Monday Afternoon At 2 O’clock
Franklin Pierce Bell, a pioneer resident of Jasper county who celebrated his 86th birthday Feb. 28, died at his home this morning at 12:20 o’clock. He had been ill the past five weeks of a heart ailment and complications of his advanced age.
Funeral services are to be held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Morgan Funeral home with interment following in the Newton Union cemetery.
Born in Ohio
Mr. Bell was born near Hillsboro, O., Feb. 28, 1855, the youngest of four boys and one girl, all deceased. He came to Iowa about 1868 and lived near Weller and Monroe. One half brother, Smith Deidrick lives in Hobart, Okla.
He was wed to Sarah Jane Jones near Monroe, Ia., Jan. 24, 1878, and to this union one daughter and four sons were born. They are Mrs. Josephine Williams of Boone, Ramon A., of Reasnor and William C. of Newton. Wesley J. died in Newton in 1918 and Lieut. Ernest T. Bell was killed in France in 1918.
Surviving besides the daughter and two sons are eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Retired in 1910
In 1868 Mr. Bell and his bride moved to Shelby county where they lived for 10 years, making a home on the prairie. They also lived near Colfax and east of Newton before retiring in 1910.
Mr. Bell was fond of orchard and shade trees and a row of black walnut trees southeast of Newton still stand as a silent tribute to him. They were plated 63 years ago.
Mr. and Mrs. Bell celebrated their Golden Wedding in 1938. Mrs. Bell died May 31, 1940.
Mr. Bell was a member of the Three Quarter Century club of The Newton Daily News and Jasper County Record.
