Hartford, South Dakota News – Mrs. James Wintersteen, who has been in poor health for several months, died at her home in the northern part of town Sunday evening.

Matilda Young was born in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, on May 8, 1835. She was married to Mr. James Wintersteen in the same county August 31, 1850. She moved to Scott County, Iowa, in 1857. Nine years later she moved to Newton, Jasper County, Iowa, in which county she spent the greater part of her life. She came to South Dakota and settled at Hartford in the fall of 1902.

She was the mother of eleven children – Wm. H., George W. and Henry J. of Hartford, Mrs. Elizabeth Gilson and Mrs. Jennie Fuller, of Sanborn, Iowa, Mrs. May Harding of Oklahoma City, Okla., Mrs. Anna Hawn of Orton, S. Dak., Thomas W. of Newton, Iowa, Mrs. Alice Murphy of Platte S. Dak., Mrs. Rosa Awtry, who died in 1881, shortly after her marriage, also, Dorothy, who died in early childhood. All but two were present at the funeral.

Forty-nine years ago in Scott County, Iowa, she, with her husband united with the Methodist Church. Wherever her lot was cast, until laid aside by sickness, she was an active worker in the church she loved. For eighteen months she had been a great sufferer, but during all this time she manifested a spirit of Christian resignation. Christ was to her a precious Friend. She calmly spoke of her departure without fear, knowing that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.

On Sabbath evening, June 17, 1906, aged 71 years, 1 month and 9 days, she closed her eyes to all the scenes of this earth and entered upon her Sabbath of eternal rest. Her husband and nine children whom she has left behind, sorrow not as those who have no hope, but look forward to a family reunion that death cannot dissolve. The funeral service was conducted from the family home in Hartford by her pastor, Rev. T. H. Trevithick, assisted by Rev. T. Wilkinson. The esteem in which she was held was evidenced by the number of friends present. She was laid to rest in the Hartford Cemetery. ~ The Newton Daily News, Tuesday, June 26, 1906, Page 1, Column 4
