Rites Held For Joe Birkenholtz
Joe W. Birkenholtz was born August 4, 1890 near Reasnor and passed away at the Veterans hospital Saturday night, July 2, at the age of 69 years, 11 months and 28 days.
He served in the first World War two years being in five main battles. When the armistice was signed, he marched into Germany where he served one year with the army of occupation.
He was married to Louise Nichols August 18, 1921. To this union was born one daughter, Rosemond, who is Mrs. Marion Swihart of Newton.
Mr. Birkenholtz was raised a Lutheran. He has been bedfast nearly six years. He worked a number of years on the county roads and on the state highways.
He leaves besides his immediate family two nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Fred; and one sister, Mrs. John Van Dusseldorp.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 5, at the Methodist church with the Rev. Orin Young, pastor of the church, officiating. A Slayden Post military service was held at the cemetery.
Mrs. Letha Gloyd, pianist, accompanied Mrs. Thelma Lewis as she sang.
Burial was in the Monroe cemetery. Pallbearers were Gerritt Kersbergen, Leo Sweeney, Dick Vanderwerf, Ed Scheffers, Glen Jackson and James Vander Weeldon.
