George J. Baker Dies; Will Hold Rites Thursday
George J. Baker, 81, of 315 East 4th St. South, a lifelong resident of the Newton community, died Monday. Funeral services will be held at 2 pm Thursday at Toland funeral home.
The Rev. Cromwell C. Cleveland, minister of the Christian church will conduct the services. Burial will be in Sugar Grove cemetery.
He is survived by a son, Verl G. Baker of Estes Park, Colo.; a granddaughter, Mary Verlin Baker of Estes Park, Colo.; four grandsons and three great-grandchildren. Baker was past grand of the Odd Fellows lodge and a member of the Knights of Pythias.
The son of William and Mary Ramsey Baker, he was born March 18, 1879 in Newton.
He was married October 8, 1902 in Newton to Dell Blair, who died December 14, 1958.
A retired farmer, Baker had been employed at the Toland funeral home for more than 15 years.
He is also survived by a brother, Harry Baker, of Colfax. ~ The Newton Daily News, Newton, IA, September 27, 1960
