Joseph Brown passed away last evening a little after nine o’clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Will Carrier, south of this city. About fourteen months ago Mr. Brown was stricken with paralysis, and for several days lay in a very critical condition, after which he seemed to rally some, and later gained some strength and was able to move to the Will Carrier home, where he has been cared for very tenderly by his wife and daughter, and where his death occurred.

The funeral will be held from the Presbyterian Church tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. ~ The Newton Daily News, Monday, April 2, 1906, Page 4, Column 2

The funeral of Joseph Brown, whose death was chronicled in the Daily News Monday, was held yesterday afternoon at the Presbyterian Church. Rev. R. F. Chambers, the pastor, had charge of the service. The music was furnished by a quartet consisting of Mrs. R. F. Chambers, Miss Sowerine, Messrs. T. G. Bryant and Lou Korf. The bearers were C. W. Campbell, H. S. Morrison, S. G. Russell, C. H. McClean, Charles Winn and T. T. McCord.

There were many beautiful floral decoration and flowers, the gifts of friends.

Joseph Brown was born March 10, 1835, in Westmoreland, County, Pennsylvania. When he was six years of age his parents moved to Jefferson County in the same state. Here he resided all through his boyhood days, and even after his marriage to Miss Ruhammah Newcom, May 13, 1858, the old farm was their home. With his family he removed to Newton in the fall of 1885.

He was the father of four children, two sons and two daughters. One son, James Boyd, died in 1893, and his other son, Alonzo Linn’s death occurred in 1901. He is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs. John McQuiston and Mrs. Will Carrier, both of this city.

Mr. Brown was one of a family of eleven children, all of whom have passed away but one brother, Rev. David Brown, of Martinsburg, Ia., who with his wife came to attend the funeral. ~ The Newton Daily News, Wednesday, April 4, 1906, Page 1, Column 2
