Funeral Rites Here Tuesday

Lewis Anthony, 72, retired employee of the city water department, died at Skiff memorial Hospital here at 6:12 p.m. Saturday following prolonged ill health.

Mr. Anthony was in charge of the city pumping station at Metz before he retired May 1, 1941, because of ill health and moved to Newton. Following the death of Mrs. Anthony June 25, 1941, Mr. Anthony had made his home with a daughter and son-in-law, Mr. & Mrs. A. J. Coffman at 706 E. 7th St. He suffered from gall stones and had been a patient at the hospital since Thursday, April 8th.

NINE CHILDREN SURVIVE

Mr. Anthony was born Aug 14, 1870 at Croton, Iowa, son of Robert and Mary Jane Anthony. He was married to Mattie J. Raines October 9, 1895 and the couple lived in Nebraska for awhile then moved to Jasper County in 1909. Twelve children were born to the couple and nine survive.

A son, Pvt. Francis Anthony, who is receiving military training at Fort Knox, Kentucky arrived in Newton Saturday afternoon for a short furlough. Relatives surviving include the nine children, Herschel (Dewey), Lewis Elmer (Tom) and Robert Eugene, Mrs A. J. Coffman and Mrs. Donovan Emmack, all of Newton; Mrs. Carl Danley and Mrs. George Danley both of Des Moines; Mrs Clifford Woody of Reasnor, and Pvt. Anthony; a sister, Mrs. Alpha Smith of Modesto, California, and three brothers, Otto Antony of Athens, MO., James Anthony of Memphis, MO., and Lee Anthony of New Boston, Iowa. 23 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and several nephews and nieces also survive.

Funeral services will be held at the Murdoch Funeral Home here Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock and burial will be in the Palo Alto Cemetery. ~ Newton Daily News April, 13, 1942
