Sad Death of Sam Allen

A letter received bearing very sad news was received by Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Allen, a few days ago, telling of the horrible death of their son, Samuel, at Medicine Bow, near Cheyenne, Wyo., on the Friday before Christmas (December 22, 1899). It appears that he was a member of a gang of men working on a railroad, and in attempting to board a passing train, was thrown under the wheels, his body being literally torn to pieces. No one happened to witness the accident and his remains were not discovered for some time afterward. His body was so badly mangled that he was buried where found. His family did not hear of the terrible news for several days afterward. His wife died only a few months ago, and he leaves four daughters, all residing in Denver. Sam was fifty years of age and had lived in Newton from 1864 until a few years ago, when he moved west. He visited his parents here during the Fair last fall. His horrible death is a crushing blow to his aged parents, his father being nearly 88 years of age and the mother in her 78th year. They have already drank deeply of sorrows bitter cup and this affliction seems almost more than they can bear up under. ~ The Newton Record Thursday, January 11, 1900
