Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sugar Grove Cemetery near Newton for August A. Allen, 84, who died of cancer Wednesday at his home at Mercy Court, 921 Sixth Ave.

Mr. Allen was born in Trenton, Mo., and lived in Des Moines for 62 years. He was a typesetter for the Des Moines Register and Tribune Co., until his retirement in 1969. He was a member of the company's retiree club, a member of the International Typographical Union and a member of the American Association of Retired Persons.

He is survived by his wife, Erma; a son, Robert of Des Moines; a daughter, Evelyn Esau of Carson City, Nev.; six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

The family will greet friends from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Westover Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Central Iowa. ~ Des Moines Register November 17, 1989
