Harriet Jordan was born in Baltimore County, Maryland, in the year 1813. She died Saturday, March 10, 1906, at the home of her son, E. F. Porter, eight miles northwest of this city about seven o’clock in the morning.
When she was a child she came with her parents to Ohio. Here she grew to womanhood and was married in 1838 to Moses Porter at Muskingum County. Three years after her marriage the family moved to Scott County, Iowa, where they made their home until the year 1865 when they came to Jasper County where they have since resided.
To them were born ten children, five of whom died in infancy. Her husband died about fourteen years ago. The five children who survive the mother are three daughters, Mrs. R. H. Goodell, whose home was about one half mile from the mother’s late home, Hattie Davis of Guthrie Center, Mrs. Mattie Patton of Tipton, Iowa and two sons, James Porter of Callison, Kansas, and E. F. with whom the mother has made her home since the death of her husband. She had twenty-nine grandchildren and at least twenty great grandchildren.
All her life Mrs. Porter was a true Christian, joining the Baptist Church at Adamsville, Ohio, in early childhood, she remained a member of the denomination until her death and often said the way grew brighter and brighter all the time.
For three or four weeks she had not been very well, but was only confined to her bed the last four days before death came.
The funeral was held yesterday, Monday, March 12th at Union Chapel, six miles northwest of their home, Rev. M. J. Sigler, pastor of the Baptist Church of this city conducting the services.
The pallbearers were her old neighbors, Charles Watt, John Kendig, Chas. Koutz, Henry Miller, Frank Brisel and S. H. Beals.
Interment was in the Union Chapel Cemetery, where the husband and one daughter lie buried. ~ The Newton Daily News, Tuesday, March 13, 1906, Page 1, Column 4
