At his home on East Main Street, about 6:30 this morning, Horace L. Eaton passed away after a long illness. He was always a strong, wiry lad, and in early manhood, it would have been thought that he would be the last of a large family to go. So two years ago when he contracted a very severe cold, it was hard, as he said, for a strong man to make up his mind that he was sick, and, though as soon as possible, he made arrangements to go to California, he had waited too long and the fatal malady could not be conquered.

At Ramona, California, he spent ten months, then with his wife and children he returned to this city last July, having given up all hope, and wishing to spend the last months of his life with his parents and other members of the family who reside here. Thus since last summer, around his bed of sad affliction, has centered the deep sympathy of loved ones, who gladly ministered to the patient sufferer. His death was not unexpected, but for all that it comes with no less sorrow to the bereaved ones.

Horace L. Eaton was born June 18, 1869, at the old Eaton home six miles east of this city. When he left the farm he went to Winona, Minn., where he attended school and graduated from the Horological Institution in that city. For a year after completing schoolwork he resided at New London, Minn., and then came to Lynnville. Here he met, and later in September 26, 1900, he married Miss Vinnie White. To them were born two children, little Beryl, four and a half years of age, and baby Horace Clair, who is not yet a year old.

Immediately after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Eaton went to New Sharon where they resided until they went to California.

Mr. and Mrs. Eaton were both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church at New Sharon. Recently they took letters from the church and three weeks ago tomorrow joined the Methodist Episcopal Church here.

Formerly Mr. Eaton was a member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge at Kellogg, but at his death he was not a member of any order.

Deceased was a true Christian man, often talked of the change that he knew was coming and was resigned. He had a large circle of friends and acquaintances in this community.

He leaves besides his wife and children, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred A. Eaton, three sisters, Mrs. Geo. C. Hart and Mrs. Alton Reynolds of this city, Mrs. G. B. Erickson of Red Oak, and five brothers, Will, Arthur and True of this city, Harry of Essex, Iowa, and Fred of Ramona, California.

The funeral will be held from the Methodist Church on Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. ~ The Newton Daily News, Saturday, March 24, 1906, Page 1, Column 3
