John Myers was born in Germany November 24, 1837, and died in this city at his late residence Wednesday, February 28, 1906.
The deceased came to America in 1857. Lived for two years in New York and then in 1860 came to Jasper County, Iowa. The next year, August 29, 1861, he was united in marriage to Louisa Kloepping. To them twelve children were born. Two died in infancy. Besides the wife he is survived by ten children: John F., George, Lewis, Henry, Mrs. Ella Carstens, Mrs. Lizzie Frith, Mrs. Valeria Couch of this city, Fred Myer of Carroll City, Iowa, Mrs. Lena Schiel of Arkansas and Mrs. Anna Larimer, residing in Marshalltown. He leaves a brother, George Myers of Kellogg and a sister, Mrs. Lena Eggart, of this city. There are eighteen grandchildren.
Mr. Myer served 3 years during the Civil War. He enlisted in Company C., 22nd Regiment Iowa Infantry Aug. 2, 1862 and was honorably discharged from same on the 25th day of July 1865 at Savannah, Ga. During the three years he was in active service he was engaged in the battles of Port Gibson, May 1, 1863, Champion Hills, May 16, 1863, Black River Bridge, May 19, 1863, the assault and siege of Vicksburg, May 22 and July 24, 1863, Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, 1864, Fisher Hill, Sept. 22, 1864, Cedar Creek, Oct. 13 and 19, 1864 and Jackson, Miss., July 17, 1863. He was a sergeant in his company.
Mr. Meyer was a member of the First Evangelical Lutheran Church of this city, from which the funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The services will be conducted by Rev. W. Dieffenbach. ~ The Newton Daily News, Thursday, March 1, 1906, Page 1, Column 6
