Betty A. Brown, daughter of Howard James and Dorothy Louise (Beard) Alexander, was born September 5, 1935, in Colfax, Iowa. She was the oldest of 3 children. Raised in the Colfax area, Betty graduated from Colfax High School with the class of 1954.

Betty was united in marriage with Fred Brown, at Fort Bliss Army Base in El Paso, Texas, on September 23, 1954. The couple would be blessed with five children. After the completion of his military service the couple made their home in the Newton area where Fred worked at the Maytag Company and Betty a secretary at the Winpower Company. Betty with her husband Fred, loved to bowl. They were very accomplished bowlers. At one point Betty’s highest average was 185. She and Fred attended many bowling tournaments and received many trophies and awards. Betty gave tirelessly of her time and talents to things she believed in. Her love of children was evident as she worked in her retirement, providing the safe crossing, in every type of weather, no matter how cold, at the stoplight on 19th street, for the children going to and from Berg School. If anything surpassed this, it was Betty’s love, loyalty and support for her family. Betty loved to be with her grandchildrenand be included in all their activities.

Betty remained in her home, cared for by her dedicated children, until just a few days before she died on December 16, 2017, at Baxter Nursing Home in Baxter, Iowa. She was 82 years 3 months and 11 days of age.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents Howard and Dorothy Alexander; husband Fred Brown; son Fred Brown Jr.; her grandson Joseph Brown; and her brother Gary Alexander. She will be forever missed by her family: daughter and son-in-law Loretta and Larry Bowman of Newton, IA; her sons and daughters-in-law Preston and Linda, Matthew, Patrick and Kelli Brown, all of Newton, IA; her grandchildren: Patricia, Christy, Samantha, Michelle, Race and Lexie her great grandchildren: Preston, Blake, Collin, Andrea, Taylor, Allison, Katelyn; many relatives and countless friends.

Services for Betty A. Brown will be held Thursday, December 21, 2017, at the Colfax United Methodist Church. A visitation with the family will begin at !:00 P.M. with a memorial service to follow at 2:00 P.M., followed by a coffee time. Burial will immediately follow the service at McKeever Cemetery north of Colfax. ~ The Johnson Funeral Home, Newton, Iowa 16 Dec 2017.
