Miss Hattie Gove, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. S. Gove, who reside on a farm three miles north of Sully, died at the Lambert Hotel yesterday morning at 10 o’clock, after eighteen long weary days of intense suffering.
For a number of years Miss Gove had been a sufferer from scrofula and two weeks ago last Wednesday she came to Newton to consult a physician in regard to some sores on her hands. After consultation and examination, it was found that she was afflicted with a “fibroid tumor.” This tumor was successfully removed, but blood poison followed. Antitoxin was administered, and though the patient made a brave fight for life, she began vomiting yesterday morning, and after one of the paroxysms of vomiting, died from utter exhaustion.
It was a very sad case, one that drew out the sympathy of all. Her father, mother, brighter and sisters were with her and everything possible was done to relieve her sufferings and help her with her fight with this disease, but her constitution could not stand the strain, and with only her mother near her, she died just after saying, “O, I am so tired.”
Hattie would have been twenty-one years old the 16th of next month. This morning the remains were taken to the home near Sully, where tomorrow afternoon at 1 o’clock the funeral will be held conducted by Rev. Payne.
The other members of the immediate family besides her father and mother, who sorrow so deeply for this daughter are a brother Harry and four sisters, Mabel and Bessie and Mesdames Charles and Frank Sparks, who reside near Sully. ~ The Newton (IA) Daily News, Monday, December 11, 1905, Page 1, Column 5
