RUSSELL I. HAGEN

KELLOGG--Russell I. Hagen, 93, died Monday, Nov. 26, 2007, at the Grinnell Regional Medical Center in Grinnell.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton with the Rev. Jim Olsen of Cornerstone Bible Fellowship officiating.

The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Our Silent City Cemetery in Kellogg.

In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Kellogg Fire and Ambulance, Kellogg Methodist Church or the Grinnell Regional Medical Center Hospice may be left at the funeral home.

The son of Roscoe and Eula (Van Winkle) Hagen, he was born June 18, 1914, in Davis City where he was raised. He moved to Kellogg in 1948.

He was united in marriage to Winifred M. Shoemaker Sept. 27, 1934, in Bethany, Mo. After graduating from Davis City High School in 1932, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1933 through 1934. He then helped construct buildings at the Armory in Burlington; worked as a ditching machine operator in the early 1940s and laid gas line across the southern states.

He also worked as a troubleshooter for the Parsons Company in Newton from 1948 to 1950. In 1950, he bought the grocery store in Kellogg, owning and operating the City Market until the late 1970s. He drove as a Purolator Courier for more than four years prior to retirement.

He was a member of the Kellogg Methodist Church and the Masonic Lodge. He enjoyed fishing, hunting (especially fox hunting), trapping and traveling. Survivors include one son, Robert Hagen (Brenda Eilander) of Kellogg; three daughters, Barbara (George) Kydd of Marion, Sue (Dwight) Lenz of Kellogg and Patty (Randy) Jackson of Newton; eight grandchildren, David Kydd, Tom (Kimberly) Kydd, Todd Lenz, Teri (Kent) Langmaid, Sean Kelly, Scott Kelly, Cortney McGee and David Eilander; 10 great-grandchildren, Meagan, Tyler, Bailey and Austin Kydd, Cortney, Abbey and Nathan Lenz, Nicole and Kayla Langmaid and Ava Svatos; one brother, Varga (Hilda) Hagen of Duvall, Wash.; and one sister, Maudwae Tanner of Hood River, Ore.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Winnie, on Feb. 17, 2007; and one brother, Don Hagen.
