James M. Friederich, long time Sumner resident and business manager passed away at Iowa River Hospice in Marshalltown on Sunday, February 5, 2012.
A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in State Center on Saturday, February 18 at 2:00.
Jay was the proprietor at the Sumner Variety Store from 1959 through 1972. After the Variety Store, Jay also owned Jay’s Café and The Cobbler Shop. The Cobbler Shop was located in the basement of the former Sumner Variety building. Jay was involved in the Sumner community as a member of the Jaycees, a Boy Scout Leader, member of the Community Club, and a member of the Meadowbrook Country Club. In Sumner, Jay was also a rural mail carrier which took he and his wife, Norma to the State Center area for a time where they retired. After retirement, Jay had the opportunity to work as a starter at the Harvestor Golf Course in Rhodes, Iowa and coordinated volunteers to work the leader boards for the Allianz Golf Tournament in Des Moines in 2003.
Jay is survived by his wife, Norma, daughter Jan (Carl) Bethmann of Winter Garden, Florida, son John (Barb) Friederich, of Monroe, Iowa, daughter Julie (Robert) Waltz of Winterset, Iowa, son Joel (Lee) Friederich of Sarona, Wisconsin and long time friend, Tim Bell of Westside, Iowa. He also is survived by his grandchildren: Cara (Jeff) Mitchell of DePont, Washington, Jade (Jason) Purdy of Alexandria, Virginia, Jeanine (Eric) Libby of Orlando, Florida, Heather (Greg) Mouw of Monroe, Iowa, Cameron Bethmann of Clermont, Florida, Lauren Bell of Waukee, Iowa, Tillie (Steve) Good of Ames, Iowa Lonnie (Ryan) King of Kirkland, Washington, Jackson Friederich of Sarona, Wisconsin, Toby Friederich of Sarona, Wisconsin, five great grandchildren plus two arriving shortly.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Glessner and Elmer Friederich, a sister Jerrie, his cousin Allen Friederich from EauClaire, Wisconsin, golfing buddy Harold Tomhave from Marshalltown, Sumner friends Bill Ribbeck, Bill Johnson, Paul Braun, Gene Rhea, Herb and Ardys Foresman plus many other business people, friends and family.
