Hold Rites For Malizza Phipps
Burial For Long Time Resident of Jasper County Is In Rock Creek Cemetery
Funeral services for Mrs. Malizza Phipps, who died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Sharer, in Marshalltown, Sunday afternoon, July 7, after a brief illness, were held at the Friends church in Grinnell Tuesday afternoon of last week at 3 o’clock. Burial was in the Rock Creek cemetery.
Malissa Wood, daughter of Thomas and Mary Davis Wood, was born January 25, 1853. When she was three years of age the family came to Iowa and located in Jasper county, where in 1869 she was united in marriage with William Franklyn Phipps. They made their home in Rock Creek township, Jasper county, until Mr. Phipps’ death, which occurred June 7, 1916. Since that time she has made her home in Grinnell.
Mrs. Phipps was on her way to Marshalltown Thursday to spend the Fourth of July with her daughter, Mrs. C. C. Sharer, when she was taken with a stroke of apoplexy, from which she died four days later.
She was a member of the Christian church.
The surviving relatives are: one daughter, Mrs. C. C. Sharer, of Marshalltown; four sons, M. G. Phipps, of Santa Anna, Calif., James C. Phipps, T. J. Phipps, and George E. Phipps, of Grinnell; and two sisters, Mrs. Lydia Roth, of Des Moines and Mrs. Rhoda Pickering of Kirksville, Mo.
A short prayer service was held at the home of Mrs. Sharer at Marshalltown Tuesday morning at 10:00 o’clock, after which the funeral party went to Grinnell.
