Death of G. S. Duffus
Colfax people were shocked last Saturday morning by the announcement that Gordon S. Duffus had died the previous day at his home near Colfax, Saskatchewan, Canada, in his 53d year, after an illness of less than a month originating from injuries sustained while treating a sick horse. The body was brought to Iowa and laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery at Malcom, last Tuesday, following a funeral service from the Presbyterian church at that place conducted by the pastor, Rev. G. S. Baskerville.
G. S. Duffus was born in Poweshiek county, near Montezuma and was the fifth son of Alexander and Elizabeth Duffus, both deceased. His education was received in the public schools of Poweshiek county and the Davenport Business College. In 1891 he was united by marriage with Elizabeth McKee, who with their sons, Seth and Cecil, and a daughter, Sarah, survive him. Five brothers and two sisters are also living. He was a member of the Presbyterian church for 20 years, and was at the time of his death a member of Colfax Presbyterian church. For about 10 years he was a resident and business man of Colfax going hence to Canada to engage in farming in which he had been unusually successful. He was a dutiful son, an honest Christian man, a model husband and father whose record was untarnished and exemplary. His death was sudden and unexpected – every indication up to within five minutes of his last breath being that his recovery was assured. Heart failure was his fatal malady. The obsequies were attended by old friends and neighbors of Malcom neighborhood and by the following from Colfax: J. R. Sharp and wife, S. M. Brown and wife, John Luther and wife, M’mes S. D. Jones, Wm. Porter, Findlay Anderson and Ed. Boyd, C. A. Thompson, Harold and Merle Thompson and B. A. Brown; C. F. Sauerman, of Newton, was also among those present – all to pay a last tribute of love and respect and take their farewell look at lifeless form of their departed friend.

We wish to thank all the friends for the words and deeds of kindness shown us in our time of sorrow and for the many beautiful flowers. Mrs. G. S. Duffus and family, Malcom, Iowa, April 9, 1914
