Suicide By Hanging
Geo. Blount Takes This Route to Eternity
“Geo. Blount has committed suicide.” Such was the report that spread over our little town like wildfire last Friday afternoon, a report we are sorry to say that proved to be but too true. Mr. Blount had been confined to the house for some time past by sickness.
During the sickness he was often despondent and several occasions he was unbalanced in mind. After dinner that day he was laying down on a lounge in the sitting room, and when shortly after 2 o’clock, Dr. Shaw called on to see him, he noticed him asleep, and quietly withdrew. Mrs. Blount soon after went out to the woodshed for some wood, and on her return stopped in the kitchen awhile supposing Mr. Blount to be asleep. On going into the room she discovered his absence and found him in the shed adjoining the house, suspended from a beam dead. And all this within fifteen or twenty minutes she had left him. Messrs. Hugh Mortison and Geo. Anderson were the first parties there after the alarm had been given. Mr. Mortison put his hand on Mr. Blount’s forehead but it found it already cold. It is supposed that immediately after Mrs. Blount left the room he got up and went into the shed, and while she was in the kitchen he took a rope of about half an inch thick, doubled it, threw it over a beam, got up on a ledge, adjusted the noose around his neck, and jumped off. When found he partly rested on the floor, his head and shoulders only being suspended. The supposition is that death occurred almost immediately after his fall. His low vitality makes this evident.
Mr. Blount was about 63 years of age, a citizen of Monroe for a great many years, was peaceful, kind and neighborly. To Mrs. B. this bereavement comes very hard and she has the sincere sympathy of the people of Monroe in her great trial and affliction.
