Death Comes to Well Known Newton Man at 9 O’clock Last Night – Funeral Sunday Afternoon
Henry S. Moore died at the City hospital at 9 o’clock Thursday night. While it was known that he would never completely recover and that death was only a matter of time, his passing away came unexpectedly. He was conscious to the last and conversed with his wife regarding business matters up to within just a few minutes of the time he died. Cancer of the bowels is assigned as the cause of his death.
Mr. Moore has been ill for the past eight weeks but it was only the last five weeks that he was confined to his bed. He was taken to the hospital five weeks ago Tuesday and submitted to a surgical operation for obstruction of the bowels. The surgeons discovered at the time of the operation that one of the chief troubles was a cancer of the stomach. It had reached the stage of development that it was not deemed advisable to attempt to remove it. From the time of the operation no hopes for a complete recovery were entertained, although it was thought at first he might be able to return to his home and that he might live for a few months. As time went on however, it became apparent that he could last only a few weeks at the most.
Henry S. Moore was born at Uniontown, Pennsylvania January 27, 1847. When eight years of age he came to Jasper county with his parents and Newton and Jasper county have been his home ever since that time. He was married to Miss Hattie Clark at Waverly, March 3, 1887, at the home of Mrs. Moore’s sister. For a number of years Mr. and Mrs. Moore resided on a farm in this county and for a time he was superintendent of the county home. In this capacity he was capable and efficient. Mr. and Mrs. Moore came to Newton from the farm eight years ago and for a time kept boarders in the house which is now used as the hospital. When he was taken to the hospital he said he felt perfectly at home for he had lived in the house long enough before it was used as a hospital that he felt that he was getting back home again. For three seasons Mr. and Mrs. Moore were in charge of the Country club house. While here they gave most excellent service and the members of the club were loathe to see them leave. Two years ago next November they took charge of the Miller house and since that time have been engaged in the hotel business.
Mr. Moore is survived by his widow, two sons, Dr. Charles E. Moore, of Palo Alto, California, and Emery Moore of Newton; and one brother, J. S. Moore who resides east of Murphy. Mrs. J. S. Moore died just two days before Mr. Henry Moore was taken to the hospital.
The death of Mr. Moore is sincerely mourned by a large host of friends in Newton and Jasper county. He was a man of the highest ideals, believed in absolute honesty in business transactions and was very devoted to his family. The sorrowing members of the family have the sympathy of the entire community.
It is not probable Dr. Charles E. Moore will be able to be present for the funeral.
Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 4 o’clock from Morgan’s Funeral Home in charge of Dr. G. C. Williams, pastor of the First Congregational church. Burial will probably be made in Newton Union cemetery.
