Funeral services for Roy D. Schermerhorn, 76, of 706 E. 14th St. S., a lifelong resident of Newton, were held today, Feb. 3, at Wallace-Pence Funeral Home.
The Rev. H. Eugene Cedarholm, pastor of the First Lutheran Church, conducted services. Burial was in Newton Union Cemetery.
Visitation with the family was held Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials to the Support Group for Children of Parents with Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders or the First Lutheran Church may be left at the funeral home.
He died Friday at Skiff Medical Center of complications of Alzheimer’s.
Survivors are his wife, Carrie; a son, Gene, of Newton; two granddaughters; five great-grandchildren; a sister, Mamie Henning of Newton; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, James John “Paddy” Schermerhorn, two sisters in infancy and a half-sister, Marie Gomez.
Mr. Schermerhorn was a member of First Lutheran Church, a charter member of the Knights of Pythias, was a member of the Pythian Sisters and United Auto Workers, Local 997, Retirees Union.
Mr. Schermerhorn had been employed in the sheet metal department at the Maytag Co. for 32 years, retiring in 1973.
The son of Roy E. and Minnie Jacobs Schermerhorn, he was born April 18, 1915 in Newton and attended Newton schools.
He was married to Carrie Cooper Dec. 1, 1938 in Newton.
