Brother of Leo Schermerhorn Died From Injuries Received
Two Newton people, Mrs. Dorothy Hughes Walcott, 35 and Wayne Schermerhorn, 33, both of Newton, died as the result of an auto-truck accident early Sunday morning, on highway No. 6 about six miles east of Colfax.
Mrs. Walcott was killed instantly and Mr. Schermerhorn lived about ten hours following the accident.
According to information received here the car driven by Mr. Schermerhorn and Mrs. Walcott crashed into the rear of a semi-trailer truck driven by A. C. Morton of Atlantic, Ia. Morton claimed he was traveling about 35 miles per hour when struck by the car. The light car literally telescoped into the victim’s laps.
Mr. Schermerhorn was known by a number in this community where he had visited with his brother, Leo Schermerhorn, who is in charge of the meat department of the W. L. Stroup & Sons Grocery. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon from the Morgan Funeral Home in Newton.
Funeral services for Mrs. Walcott were conducted Tuesday morning from the Sacred Heart Catholic church in Newton. Burial was made at Grinnell.
