John Martin Mercier, 84, died Monday afternoon at the Gardner Nursing Home in Colfax. He had suffered a stroke a few days after moving to Colfax from Afton, Iowa, nine weeks ago and his condition had continued to fail since that time. Mr. Mercer is the father of Ernest Mercer of this city and with his wife came to Colfax to spend the winter months, the past few years.
The son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Orto Mercer, he was born July 23, 1878 at Clearfield, Iowa, and received his education in the rural schools at Clearfield. On Jan. 6, 1904 he was married to Lelia Weigart at Grant City, Mo. He was a farmer and resided at Grant City from 1902 until moving to Mt. Ayr in 1914. In 1934 he moved to Afton, Iowa and resided there until coming to Colfax.
Mr. Mercer was a member of the Methodist Church at Arispe.
Survivors are his wife; son, Ernest M. of Colfax; four grandchildren, two great grandchildren and two brothers, Walter of Rockport, Mo. and Elmer of Grant City, Mo.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Methodist Church in Arispe, Iowa. Rev. M. J. Wilkins of Shannon City conducted the services.
Walters Funeral Home at Colfax was in charge of arrangements.
Burial was at Grant City, Mo.
