Johnson, Eliza Franklin – 1841-1913

Eliza Franklin was born at White Pigeon, Mich., December 7, 1841. She came to Iowa with her mother’s family when a child and they located in Jasper county, where she grew to womanhood and taught in the public schools. She was united by marriage to Robert Rainy Johnson January 26, 1865, to this union three children were born, Wm., Emmett and Ruby. Mr. J. died December 18, 1909. Mrs. Johnson had a hard fall about two years ago and had never walked since, and much of the time remained in her bed. The shock of her son, Emmett’s death May 10, 1913, was a hard blow for her and nearly shattered her nervous system. Her decline was gradual and her suffering intense at last passing to the land of rest at her home September 24, 1913. She leaves a foster son, Eddie Pulaski, who has lived in the home since a mere child, Wm., his wife and two children and Ruby who have lovingly cared for her during her long and tedious illness, Mrs. Johnson united with the M. P. church many years ago and was always active in church and Sunday Schools of the neighborhood and in the home as long as health permitted and interested when a shut-in for so long.
The funeral was held at Ashton Friday 2 p.m., Rev. Griggsby, of Mingo, preached a fitting sermon from II Cor. 5: 8-10. A chorus sang her favorite hymns. A large concourse attended and beautiful flowers were tributes of esteem. Interment was in the Ashton cemetery beside her husband and son.
The pall bearers were six neighbors, M. F. Berkley, J. A. Leonard, Geo. Hansen, Lee Signs, Lincoln Tiffany and Sam Dodd. Those from a distance were her nephews, John Franklin, of Des Moines, Cyrile Winslow, wife and daughter, Clara, of Colfax; her nieces, Mrs. Belle Couch and daughter, of Aberdeen, S.D.; Mrs. Ransom Thompson, of Polk City; Mrs. Cora Groves and children, Donald and Ada Elzeberry, of Des Moines; and friends, Mrs. Frank Elliott and nephew, Mr. Earl Elliott, of Story county.
