Iowa City – Elma Ilene Hyndman, 70, of Iowa City, died at her home Tuesday, Oct. 17, of a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Oct. 21, at the Howard Street Christian Church in Colfax. The Rev. Jill Flyr will officiate. Walters-Coburn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Interment will be at the Colfax Cemetery.
Mrs. Hyndman was born May 5, 1930, in Newton Township, the daughter of Elmer and Della Wade Peery. She graduated from Newton High School, and attended Drake University studying music education and received a BA in psychology from Bellevue college in Bellevue, Neb.
She married Richard J. Hyndman on Sept. 14, 1952. They divorced after 31 years of marriage she worked as an aide for special needs children and was a junior and cherub choir director at First Christian /church in Newton. She also served as a musical activity director at several care centers and health facilities in the Newton area. She was a former member of the Harmonettes musical group in Newton, and a member of the women’s Bible Study Fellowship.
She is survived by a son, Richard J. Hyndman Jr., and his wife Peg of Coralville; two daughters, Carol and her husband Dennis Pearson of Hale center Texas and Lynda and her husband Dwight Sellers of Denison, Texas; and several cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and a sister.
