Holmes, Nathan - 1850-1904

Nathan Holmes was born in Oswego county, New York in 1850 and died at his residence in Valeria, Iowa, February 15th, 1904, aged 53 years, 11 months and 5 days. The body was taken to Adel, Iowa, for burial beside some of his children who were buried there. Mr. Holmes served as a soldier in the war of the rebellion in Co. D of the 193d New York volunteers. He came to Iowa in 1871. On November 8th, 1871 he was united in marriage to Miranda Geer. Of the ten children born to them: Harry, of Valeria, Mrs. Mary Harmon of Adel, Mrs. Clara Hickman of Valeria, Mrs. Susie Hutchins of Alden and Walter survive with the mother to mourn his loss. Mr. Holmes was a much respected citizen and made many friends by honesty and uprightness in all his dealings. His fatal illness was dropsy resulting from disease contracted in the army and his sufferings were severe until the end. DANITE - Valeria, Iowa, Feb. 17, 1904
