HOGUE, HOLLAND

Dr. E. M. Holland, for 27 years past a resident and practicing physician of Colfax, died about midnight last Wednesday, at the age of 71 years 2 months and 5 days. He leaves a wife and four children – E. L. of Meadow Grove, Henry of Arlington, and Mrs. Lottie Hogue, of Winside, Neb., and Vinson, of Colfax.
Dr. Holland was a native of Clearmount county, Ohio, and went with his parents to Illinois when only 7 years of age. At twenty-five he was ordained a local preacher of the M. E. church, one year after becoming a member of that denomination, and continued in the work to the end. He was twice married – to the wife who survives him February 4, 1875. His 27 years’ residence here was in the house where he died. He was a man of few friendships, but true and devoted to those who came within the circle of his friendship. He will be remembered for his kindness to the poor and his uniform liberality to every deserving charity. His fatal illness was brief, and his passing peaceful and painless.
The funeral of Dr. E. M. Holland was from the M.E. Church last Sunday at 11 a.m. Pastor Stahl read an autobiographical sketch of deceased and was followed by Rev. Dr. C. J. English, of Villisca, with a eulogistic tribute appropriate and eloquent. Remarks were also made by Gen. Weaver, Preston Brown and Hon. E. E. Dotson – the latter in behalf of the Masonic order which conducted the burial service at Oak Hill. The floral decorations and mourning draperies added to the impressive solemnity of the occasion which was attended by a vast congregation, every member of which realized in the passing of the good man the loss of a personal friend and public benefactor.
