Well Known Local Resident is Dead
Earl Hammer Succumbs to Long Illness; Funeral Services Tomorrow
Earl Hammer, a well known resident of Newton and for many years an employee of the local postoffice, died at his home here yesterday afternoon following a prolonged illness which had kept him bedfast since last July. He was 37 years old.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock in the First Methodist Episcopal church with Dr. Robert Lee Stuart in charge. Short services for the immediate family will be held at the home at 1:30 o’clock.
Born in 1891
Glen Earl Hammer, a son of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. Hammer of Newton, was born Oct. 24, 1891 near Newton. He was the eldest of a large family of children, all of whom will be present for the funeral except one sister, Mrs. William Swecker of Los Angeles, Calif.
His boyhood was spent on a farm and he attended and graduated from the rural schools of Jasper county. Later he attended the Newton Normal college and still later was a student at Highland Park College in Des Moines.
Mr. Hammer spent practically all of his life in Jasper county, with the exception of the time he was away from home attending school. Since leaving the rural schools he has made his home in Newton.
Married in 1917
He was married Jan. 23, 1917 to Miss Wanda Dennis, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Dennis, former Newton residents who now made their home at Long Beach, Calif. To this union one son was born. Keith Hammer, who is now four years old.
Mr. Hammer was an active member of the local Elks Lodge and for the last 14 years had been an active worker in the Methodist Episcopal church.
For 16 years he had been employed by the Newton postoffice. Starting as a carrier, he later accepted a position in the office but two years ago sought a transfer to a route because of his health.
Mr. Hammer has sustained two major operations. The first, in 1918, appeared to yield a complete recovery but he never fully recovered from the second operation which took place in 1926.
Through his connection with the postoffice Mr. Hammer had made a wide circle of friends and acquaintances in Newton.
