MINGO – John Joseph Gannon, 84, of Mingo, died of respiratory failure, Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax. Burial will be at Sam’s Cemetery.
Friends may call at the church in Colfax after 2 p.m. today where family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. The Walters-Coburn Funeral Home in Colfax is handling arrangements.
Memorials to the Iowa State Fair Blue Ribbon Foundation or the Jasper County Fair will be accepted.
Born near Mingo, Mr. Gannon was a longtime resident of the Mingo area, where he worked as a farmer. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Colfax, Iowa, Angus Association, American Angus Association, Iowa Cattleman’s Association, Mingo Men’s Club, Colfax Golf and Country Club and the Hole in One Club. Mr. Gannon attended Iowa State College from 1934 to 1936 and was the Firestone National Champion Farmer in 1939.
Survivors include his wife, Helen; seven daughters, Sheila of Rochester, Minn., Marianne of Oakland, Calif., Jeanie of Seaford, N.Y., Maureen of Mitchellville, Bebe of Baxter, Annie of Mingo and Eileen of Des Moines; seven sons, Daniel of Ankeny, James of Holualoa, Hawaii, Mike of Colfax, Robert of Cardiff, Calif., Richard of Des Moines, Joseph of Iowa City and Christopher of Des Moines; a sister, Helen Meade of Oxford; and 23 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and a grandson.
