Aged Resident Found Dead Saturday Morning
Charles Conway, Sr., Passed Away at Age of 81 Years
Charles Conway, Sr., of this city was found dead in bed Saturday morning, having passed away during the night apparently without a struggle.
He was in his usual health on Friday and had visited friends during the day, retiring in the evening without seemingly any distress or ill health and the sudden passing came as a shock to his children, relatives and friends.
Mr. Conway was born in Armitage, Staffordshire, England, July 4, 1849, and departed this life at his home in Colfax, April 25, 1931, aged 81 years, 9 months, and 21 days.
When a young man Mr. Conway served eight years in the British Army, in the capacity of the late Queen Victoria's regimental guards.
In January 1875, he was united in marriage to Miss Emma Walker in England. To this union eleven children were born, five of whom have preceded their father in death together with the mother, who departed this life March 18, 1911. He leaves to mourn his going, six children: Charley, Jr., Mrs. Ellen Nichols, Mrs. Harriett Oswalt, Mrs. Mary Blades, all of Des Moines; William of Colfax, and Mrs. Ethel Elkins of Chicago; also eighteen grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Mr. Conway has been a faithful member of the Colfax Methodist church since 1922 and previous to that he was a member of the Church of England.
About thirty-six years ago, he, with his family moved to the Oswalt neighborhood, and has since been a resident of this community.
Funeral services were held Monday afternoon from the Colfax Methodist church with Rev. L. C. McDonald officiating. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. B. F. Van Dyke, Mrs. Earl Plummer, and B. H. Sandy, accompanied by Mrs. Cleo Wall. Interment was had at the Youngstown Cemetery, southeast of Des Moines.
