Thomas D. Baldwin was almost eighty-three years of age when he died at his home on West Marion street Friday, Dec. 23, 1910.
His native home was at Greensburg, Indiana. He was born Dec. 27, 1827 and if he had lived until today he would have celebrated his four score and three years.
In 1848 when he had reached his majority he came to Iowa and located at Fairfield. There he lived four years and then in the spring of 1852 he crossed the western plain with some gold seekers to California making the trip with ox teams.
Two years he remained in the coast state and then came back to Iowa and lived in Albia. It was there he married Nancy Emery March 21, 1858 and there their five children were born.
Ten years after his marriage Mr. Baldwin brought his family to Jasper County and they have continued to reside here.
He is survived by one sister, Mrs. V. Pratt, of Sanburn, Iowa, who is now in her 89th year. She was not able to come to his funeral.
His wife and four children and nine grandchildren also survive him. The only daughter, Mrs. Valeria Patterson, resides at Fairmount, Neb.; Charles R. and J. D. reside on farms five miles east of Newton and Frank is a hardware merchant in this city. One son died in Albia in childhood.
His daughter arrived just a few hours before he passed away. She was joined by her son, George the first of the week and they will remain in the home a few days longer.
The other near relatives were all here but one daughter-in-law, Mrs. Charles Baldwin, who was sick and could not come out for the funeral.
Mr. Baldwin was very quiet and unassuming.
He was a great home man and patiently bore an affliction he had for years without complaint. A year ago he was very sick and at that time it did not seem that he would recover but he did although after that time he stayed more closely than ever in the house. The two weeks preceding his death he was very weak and ill and confined to his bed.
The funeral was held from the home Saturday afternoon and his body was laid in the mausoleum at the Newton cemetery.
