William Shaw Carpenter, 42, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, July 24, 2016. A Catholic mass was held on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at St. Mary’s Catholic church in Elkhart, Iowa. Burial was at Holy Cross Cemetery, Farrar, Iowa.
Will was the son of Colleen Herbold Carpenter and Michael Carpenter and was the second of four boys in his family.
Will received his Juris Doctorate from Drake University School of Law after which he went to work championing the causes of the less fortunate and underprivileged, often pro bono. His practice focused on immigration and father’s rights law cases. Most recently he lived and worked in the Minneapolis, Minnesota area. Will was also a graduate of Iowa State University and PCM High School where he was affectionately known by his teachers as smart, funny and “the good kind of ornery.”
Will is fondly remembered for his brilliant sense of humor and ability to tell incredible stories that kept his large extended family, friends and co-workers entertained. He adored his nieces, nephews and cousins and never missed an opportunity to help out the little guy, handle a bully or make someone feel special.
Will is survived by his mother Colleen of Urbandale and brothers Jerry (Kelly), Michael and Scott (Kate), his grandparents Lyle and Jeanne Carpenter, seven nieces and nephews, dozens of cousins and fiancée Miss Piew Niputta.
He was preceded in death by his father, Michael and grandparents Gerald and Celeste Herbold of Mingo.
