Mrs. Scott McConnell
----------------------------------
Mrs. Scott McConnell was born in Jasper County, Iowa, on April 14, 1861 and passed from this world on Jan. 4, 1937, age 75 years, 8 months, and 24 days. Mr. Scott McConnell and Miss Minerva McKeever were married on Oct. 8, 1876. To this union ten children were born. Three have preceded their mother in death. One child died in infancy. Carney died at the age of 21 in 1900 and Clark died at the age of 35 in 1918. The living that will miss our sister here on this earth are the husband and four sons and three daughters. They are Oscar of Harlan, Frank of Co. Bluffs, Mrs. Alice Christensen of Harlan; Mrs. Matilda Chambers of Harlan, Arthur of Harlan, Mrs. Edith Christensen of Motly, Minn., and Bennie of Harlan. She also leaves on brother, Frank Winters of Salton, Wash. Twenty-nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
Mr. and Mrs. Scott McConnell were amoung the old pioneers of Shelby County. They have lived in Jackson Township for nearly 70 years. Last October they celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary. Mrs McConnell's parents passed away when she was only seven years old. They both died of small pox and were the first to be laid to rest in the Irwin Cemetery. Mrs. McConnell was a member of the Bowman's Grove Baptist Church. She joined that church in her early youth and retained her membership there until the church disbanded and the building was sold.
Mrs. McConnell has been of poor health for the past six months and during that time she has made her home with Mrs. M. Christensen of Harlan. The funeral services were held at the Schack & Swinehart Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon. Rev. A. H. Nelson preached the sermon, and special music was provided by Miss Fern Norgaard and Mrs. R. T. Banks. They sang two special requests numbers that had been requested by the members of the family and Mrs. A. H. Nelson sang a solo. The beautiful floral offering expressed the love of a great host of friends.
