The death of Mrs. Mark Evans occurred Saturday, Sept. 23, 1905, about midnight, after an illness of about three weeks during which time she grew weaker each day, until finally the call came and she was released from this life.

Martha Matilda Inman was born at Steubenville, Jefferson County, Ohio, February 9, 1820, her age at the time of her death being 85 years, 7 months and 14 days. While still a child she removed with her parents to a farm near Reynoldsville, Ohio, where she resided till Dec. 29, 1837, when she was united in marriage to Mark Evans of that city. Mr. and Mrs. Evans made their home at Reynoldsville until 1855, when with their family they removed to this city where they have since resided in the home where her death occurred. Her husband died Feb. 3, 1888, just a few weeks after the celebration of their golden anniversary.

To Mr. and Mrs. Evans were born five sons, John Wesley Evans, of New York City, William Edwin Evans, of Osborn, Kansas, and Oscar, E. I. and Frank E. of this city.

When fifteen years of age Mrs. Evans became a member of the Seceders Church and was a consistent and faithful member until after her marriage, when she and her husband became members of the New School Presbyterian, and was a member of this denomination for twenty-seven years, at which time their pastor died and there being a small number of members, the organization disbanded and Mr. and Mrs. Evans then joined the Congregational Church of this city. She has always been a regular attendant at church services if possible, but during the past few years, her health has been such that she could not attend during the winter months.

Mrs. Evans was a woman of many estimable qualities. She was always a most devoted mother and housekeeper and her happiness was wrapped up in her home life, feeling that her first duty always was there, and never seemed to tire of doing for her dear ones and teaching the principles of truth and righteousness.

The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Congregational Church. ~ The Newton Daily News, Tuesday, September 26, 1905, Page 1, Column 3
