March 17, 1920 - November 9, 2016

Henrietta W. Poortinga, age 96 of Monroe, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2016, at The Cottages in Pella. Funeral services will be held on Saturday November 12, 2016, at 10:30 a.m. at the Monroe United Methodist Church in Monroe. Burial will follow at Silent City Cemetery. The family will greet friends following the burial at a luncheon back at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Jasper County Animal Rescue League or the Monroe Fire Department. The daughter of Hubert and Hattie (Dykhuis) Sukkel, Henrietta was born on March 17, 1920, in rural Otley, Iowa. On October 24, 1950, she was united in marriage to John Poortinga. Henrietta was a member of the Monroe United Methodist Church and was active in the United Methodist Women. She enjoyed cooking, baking, flowers and gardening.

Those left to honor her memory includes her daughter, Julia (Joe) Philippson of Monroe; four grandchildren, Jonathan (Laura Leigh) Wilson, Bickley (Trent Ainsworth) Wilson, Joe W. (Kim) Philippson, and Jennie (Kevin) Albertson; and ten great grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband in 1981; two sisters, Hendrieka Sukkel and Elizabeth Brouwer and a brother, Richard Sukkel. ~ The Coburn Funeral Home, Colfax, Iowa 9 Nov 2016.
